What is honed concrete?

Joondalup's Trusted Concrete Contracting Company

Honed concrete is constructed in the same form as your generic grey concrete. The only things that differ are your choices of colour, type of aggregate and the final steps of the finished product. Once the site has been prepared, you have chosen the best concrete mixture that suits your colour theme and budget, we will begin pouring the concrete via a concrete truck, in some cases a concrete pump may be needed if the area is not accessible by wheelbarrow. During the installation stage the concrete will be levelled to the correct height, ball floated (smoothed out)  and left to set for up to 7 days.

Once the concrete is set the team will be back to grind or hone the top layer of concrete, revealing the true beauty of exposed aggregate underneath. The grinding is done by using a large commercial concrete grinder, once honed the surface will be washed using a high pressure washer or hose dispersing the left over dust and debris ready for the application of the sealant. The sealant is placed over the top of the honed aggregate to protect it from stains and discoloration. Sealer only needs to be reapplied every 3-5 years to maintain the magnificent finish. Once this process is finished you will be amazed with the results and transformation of your area.

Colour choices and types of aggregate, Having a large range of concrete suppliers around the Joondalup area allows for a variety of mixes to customise or choose from depending on your budget.

Benefits of honed concrete

Exposed aggregate is poured the same way that standard concrete is, the difference comes at the finishing stages. A water based chemical retarder concentrate is sprayed on top of the concrete that has just been poured. The retarder is used to delay the top layer from setting at a controlled depth. This allows concrete below the surface and retardent to harden like normal.

The top layer or the skin of the concrete is removed using a pressure washer or sometimes a garden hose, washing off the skin of the concrete reveals the amazing aggregate. There is a huge range of coloured concrete and stones to choose from. There is also the option for different size stones to be added to your aggregate, ranging from 3 mm up to 20 mm. With a huge range of options for colours and texture, there is always a concrete mix to suit your design in Perth’s Northern Suburbs.
